Chinese President Xi Jinping Welcomed to Italy at Start of Three-Day Visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed by Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Friday, March 22, at the start of a three-day visit during which he will sign an accord drawing Italy into his giant “Belt and Road Initiative” infrastructure plan, despite U.S. opposition.
The meeting between the two presidents came on the first day of Xi’s visit to Europe, aimed at promoting a modern-day Silk Road, reviving the ancient trade routes that connected East and West.
More than 150 countries, regions and international groups have already signed pacts with Beijing. (Reuters)
