Ovidio Guzmán López: Mexican Authorities Release Dramatic Arrest Video of ‘El Chapo’ Son
Videos released by Mexico’s Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) on October 30 show the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López, Son of “El Chapo,” following a shootout between authorities and gunmen in Culiacan, Mexico, on October 17.
The Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection said members of Mexico’s National Guard and SEDENA were patrolling an area of Culiacan when they were “attacked from a house.” During the incident Mexican officials took control of a home where they found Ovidio Guzmán López, son of cartel boss “El Chapo” Joaquín Guzmán, and detained him.
A report from the Daily Beast said Mexican authorities were in the area and raided the home to carry out an extradition order on Ovidio Guzmán López from the United States.
As gunmen engaged authorities in a firefight on the streets, several dozen inmates escaped from a local prison, CBS reported. Eight people were killed in the resulting firefight, including one civilian, one National Guard agent, one inmate, and five “aggressors,” and 19 people were injured, according to a government press conference.
Ovidio Guzmán López was released shortly after being detained in a move that President Andrés Manuel López said was made in the interest of protecting local civilians, reports said.
