Millions in Assam await fate with release of final citizenship list
Aug 31 was a day of reckoning for millions in India’s northeastern state of Assam. After a four-year census, the Indian government would publish a citizenship register raising the prospect that millions left off the list, would be rendered stateless overnight. India’s ruling BJP insisted the move was to identify illegal immigrants. Only those who could prove that they or their forefathers were in India before 1971 would be included on the list. The cutoff referred to when Bangladesh fought a war of independence.
