Pulwama Terror Attack: Time to Rethink Article 370? | India Development Debate

How’s the Govt going to deal with the Kashmir situation? That’s the big question at the top of mind of policymakers in New Delhi with certain sections plunging to address the elephant in the room – reviewing or abrogating Article 370. Days after the deadly Pulwama attack voices have been raised on the efficacy of providing special status to the militancy-affected state. Though a long-standing demand of the BJP to abrogate the special status accorded to Jammu & Kashmir the ruling party has so far been non-committal on its core agenda & even dropped the demand of revisiting Article 370 that binds the Himalayan state’s accession to India when it tied up with the PDP to form a government in the state. But it’s easier said than done with Constitutional provisions making it clear that any change in the relationship between New Delhi & Srinagar has to be recommended by the state assembly with Indian Parliament having little or no say in the matter. Is it time to take a relook at Article 370 or provide more autonomy to J&K within the framework of Constitution – that’s what Supriya Shrinate puts the focus on in this India Development Debate.
